Negotiations over President Joe Biden’s sweeping domestic agenda hit the skids this month when Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) made clear she’d refuse to back tax hikes on corporations to pay for an expected $2 trillion in spending.

Management by Metrics Is Upending Newsrooms and Killing Journalism

Journalism is in crisis. The past two decades have seen tens of thousands of newspaper jobs vanish and hundreds of communities become news deserts. Run-amok commercialism continues to hollow out and distort our news media in increasingly dangerous ways. Yet, despite such worrying signs, the precise contours of these structural transformations often escape scrutiny, and it’s often unclear what’s truly new. After all, profit-driven media have always underserved and misrepresented large segments of society along socioeconomic divides.

The Anti-Politics and Anti-Comedy of Norm Macdonald

When Norm Macdonald passed away last month at the age of sixty-one, most major outlets ran obituaries praising his long career in comedy. Many of us were reminded how funny Macdonald was and took to YouTube to dip into the deep reservoir of his material.
Notable figures of the online right did the very same thing, some of them claiming Norm Macdonald as one of their own. While they may have overstated their case, it can nonetheless be difficult to square appreciation for Macdonald’s comedy with his ambiguously conservative politics.

When you think about it, the phony claim that, in 2013, former President Donald Trump cavorted with prostitutes in the Moscow Ritz-Carlton who urinated in front of him on a bed once used by former President Barack Obama and his wife was genius.
After all, who could make this stuff up? The “dossier” in which it first appeared, written by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, was unsuccessfully shopped to the press corps during the 2016 presidential campaign.

No, Joe Biden — the sky isn’t falling: Goodwin

If you’ve been taking the latest climate warnings from the White House seriously and literally, you believe the Earth is about to become either a ball of fire or an enormous ocean.
I humbly suggest a more likely possibility: You are being blitzed by a government snow job.
The claim that the end is near is the latest example of how the Biden administration is creating more problems for itself than it is solving. That the climate scare effort employs a whole-of-government approach doesn’t make it any more credible.
Quite the contrary.

Netflix (Still) Isn’t Your Friend

In the last week, Netflix’s carefully crafted image as a content creator with a commitment to serving underrepresented audiences has gone up in flames, and instead of dousing the fire, the company’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, has been pouring gasoline on it. What started as a controversy over transphobic material in Dave Chappelle’s new special has grown into a full-blown crisis, culminating in a walkout by the company’s trans employees on Wednesday.

The 1 percent lecture about climate change while making it worse

Just west of the Pacific Coast Highway in the Paradise Cove area of Malibu, a major construction project is underway. Every day, at least 20 pickup trucks full of workers, earthmovers and multiple cranes belching black smoke crowd onto the lot, power up and get to work building Laurene Powell Jobs’ dream beach compound.

Rape on Philadelphia train echoes NYC’s notorious Kitty Genovese murder

In 1964, Kitty Genovese was stabbed, robbed, raped and killed on a street in New York City. The crime went on for almost an hour, with nobody coming to Genovese’s aid. Initial media coverage suggested that dozens of people had watched it take place and done nothing, not even calling police. It was revealed years later that these details had been considerably distorted, but by then the Genovese incident had taken shape in the public mind as a cautionary tale about life in big cities.
