America’s car crash epidemic

Driving is the most dangerous thing most Americans do every day. Virtually every American knows someone who’s been injured in a car crash, and each year cars kill about as many people as guns and severely injure millions.
It’s a public health crisis in any year, and somehow, the pandemic has only made it more acute. Even as Americans have been driving less in the past year or so, car crash deaths (including both occupants of vehicles and pedestrians) have surged.

Manhunt! Did Van-Life Boyfriend Disappear Into the Wild?

Florida police said Saturday that they are searching a wilderness preserve for Brian Laundrie, the person of interest in the disappearance of his girlfriend, “van-life” YouTuber Gabby Petito.
In a tweet, the North Port cops said Laundrie’s family told investigators they believe he entered the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve earlier this week.
Police finally spoke with Laundrie’s family on Friday night and learned that he had gone missing while under increasing scrutiny over Petito’s disappearance.

Now the Boyfriend in Van-Life Saga Is Missing, Too

A week after frantic search efforts began for 22-year-old “van-life” YouTuber Gabby Petito, the one person thought to hold all the answers has also disappeared.
A lawyer for Petito’s fiancée, Brian Laundrie, said that Laundrie had also vanished. When police entered Laundrie’s parents’ home late Friday, they told officers they had not seen him since Tuesday—and now the FBI is hunting for him.
Police in North Port, Florida, who are now under fire for having a single person of interest go missing, issued a statement defending themselves.
